Commissioned Art

Hello!

I offer a very limited number of commission slots each year for collectors who want a specific piece in a style similar to one of my previous collections. This process is a partnership between the collector and the artist, so I want to give you as much information up front as possible.

Here is how my commission process typically works:

  • First, you and I spend as much time as we need to figuring out what size and style of piece you are looking for in your space. We can look at your favorite pieces, artists, memories, values, Pinterest boards- anything is fair game. I want to understand your style aesthetic. This often includes some emails back and forth and at least one phone call or zoom to talk live.

  • Once we have a good understanding of what you are looking for, I will draft three preliminary sketches that capture our vision and send them to you for your notes.

  • After that round of feedback, I'll get started on the final piece. Before I start on the final piece, I ask for a 25% deposit. Once I'm working on the final piece, I typically stop sending photo updates so we can preserve the final reveal.

  • When the piece is done, I'll take photographs and videos to share the final product with you and get the green light before delivering or sending it your way.

  • This whole process takes several months and will depend on the level of detail in our final design. Once the final design is agreed on, I’ll be able to give you a firm deadline.

Pricing:

I try to be as transparent about pricing as possible. I price my commissions based on square inches, materials, and estimated work time, so more detailed pieces that take more time generally end up costing more. Here is a list of general pricing benchmarks:

  • 9 x 12 in framed canvas: $750 - $950

  • 18 x 24 in framed canvas: $1,500 - $2,250

  • 24 x 32 in framed canvas: $2,500 - $4,250

  • 30 x 40 in framed canvas: $4,750 - $7,250

  • 36 x 36 in framed canvas: $4,850 - $7,350

  • 48 x 60 in framed canvas $7,850 - $12,750

  • For larger pieces, we can discuss pricing on a piece- by-piece basis.

One of Kind Work

A major difference between commissioned pieces and pieces that I do as part of a collection is that, as the person commissioning the piece, you get to be the only person who ever has that image. I would love to post about it on social media after it is installed, but I won't ever make prints or any other type of reproductions of your piece for anyone else. This does bump the price of commissions up a bit, but it preserves the unique nature of your original work.

If you decide that you do want to start down this path, either now or in the future, here are a couple of questions for you to start thinking about that would kick off the process:

  • Who are some of your favorite artists and pieces of art?

  • I’d love to see some photos of the space you are thinking about putting a commissioned piece and/or any Pinterest boards that represent your home styling vibes.

  • What do you want this piece to make you feel when you see it? What do you want it to communicate to the world about who you are?

Talk soon,

Joe
